General Questions

How many people are racing?
As of 12:50 pm May 9, (PST), there are 292,306 people in the Race.

When did the Race start? When does it end?
The Race for the Big Cats 2 started on October 4, 2000. It will end whenever people have supported 25,000 square miles of habitat. So really, the finish line is up to you! How fast can you save??? To participate in Care2's Race for the Big Cats, click here.

May I add a link to The Race from my website / newsletter?
Yes! We'd love to have your help! This is a race everyone wins. Click here for Race buttons and banners.

Are there other Races that I can support?
Yes! Care2 is currently running another race called Race for the Rain Forest, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. You can find a convenient link to the Rain Forest Race on the top right hand side of each Big Cats page and vice versa so that you can easily go back an forth between the Races.

Do I need to re-register for other Races?
No! You can use the same member name and password for all of Care2's Races.

When does the calendar day start for tracking clicks?
The day begins at 12:01 am and ends at midnight.

What is the Race's privacy and spam policy?
When you use our online invitation form to invite a friend to enter the Race, only one email will be sent to that person. Your friend's email address will not be added to any list of any kind. If your friend decides to enter the Race, too, and clicks on the Race address in the invitation, s/he will be given the opportunity to sign up to be a member of the Race just as you were. If s/he opts to sign up, s/he will receive an update on the race every week, via email. This newsletter can be disabled by clicking on the "My Settings" link found under "Race Stats" on the left hand column menu of the Race website. If your friend does not sign up, s/he will receive zero additional emails from Care2.com, or the Race for the Big Cats. For more information, click here.

What are the prizes for the winners?
Fame and Fortune! (well, at least some fame) We'll announce the names of the top 100 racers on Care2.com, visited by over a million people monthly. (Hey, this is an altruistic race for a good cause! It's a race we all win.)

How am I helping?

Will I actually support Big Cats?
Yes! You generate revenue to support Big Cats when you click a "Big Cats" button. This money goes directly to Wildlife Conservation Society's (WCS) Big Cat programs. You can click a "Big Cats" button up to once per day. You should also invite all your friends to come to the site to click a "Big Cats" button daily to increase your total cumulative impact. For more information click here.

Where exactly is the land I am supporting?
WCS is working to support vital habitat for the tiger in India and Asia, the Jaguar in the Americas, and the Snow Leopard in Central Asia. For more information, click here.

Do I really make a difference?
Certainly! Let's say you start the Race for the Big Cats on day one and tell 3 people each day for the first 5 days. If all of those people invited play the Race every day until the end of the Race, they will will help support the protection of 179 square miles (45,824 hectares!) of endangered big cat habitat. So, yes! Your actions do make a difference.

Exactly how much land is actually supported per click?
The amount of land supported depends upon how many sponsors we have and how much money they donate. In general, with just one sponsor, each click of a "Big Cats" button generates a donation that supports roughly 1.3 acres of big cat habitat. With two sponsors, each click generates a donation to support 2.6 acres. With three sponsors, that figure rises to 3.9 acres, and so on. If you're interested in sponsoring the Race, click here for more information. If you know of potential sponsors, please tell them to contact us at . More sponsors means more big cat habitat protected!!

How do I know how much Big Cat habitat has been supported?
After you click a "Big Cats" button, you will see a running total of the amount of Big Cats habitat supported. Click the links at left for more information.

Logging In / Getting Credit

I am a member of Care2.com. Do I have to sign-up for the race?
No. Care2 members are already registered. Simply use your normal Care2 login name and password to sign-in.

If I participated in the Race for the Rain Forest, do I need to re-register for Race for the Big Cats? What happens to my account?
There's no need to re-register. Your user name and password are the same. It's a new Race, so everyone starts again at zero acres. You'll get credit for re-inviting friends from past or existing Races, if you invite them before they invite you or before they visit the Race for the Big Cats and login.

Why can't I login?
The most likely reason is that your web browser is not accepting cookies. If you enable your cookies and login again, it should work. For more help, click here.

If I do not login, am I still helping support Big Cats?
Yes! A donation will be made each time you click a Big Cat button, up to once per day. However, neither you nor your friend who invited you will "get credit" toward the Race if you do not login.

I am not getting the credit I deserve for visiting. Why?
Did you log in each time you visit? A donation will be made each daily visit, but in order for your race stats to increase, you have to be logged in every time you click.

I am not getting credit for some of my friends who are visiting. Why?
Your friend must visit the Race through a link containing your unique tracking code. Once they reach the Race and click on the Cat of their choice, your friend must also sign up for a race account or you will not get credit for her/his visit. You will NOT receive credit for friends who have already visited the site before going through your invitation. If a friend has joined the Race and you are not getting credit for your friend's clicks, we CANNOT reinstate credit for you. However, please note that your friend's clicks, while not showing up in your statistics, are still helping generate donations to help protect big cats.

Do I receive credit for friends I email without going through the Race's online invitation form?
Yes, if you include your unique tracking code in the emails you send without going through our online invitation form. If you use our online invitation form, we will automatically include a unique tracking code for you.

I made a Care2 t-shirt or other branded product purchase to help save more acres. Why did my personal race stats not increase?
With your purchase, we or a partner merchant donates a percentage of the revenues to help big cat habitat. Your purchase counts only toward the total race stats, not your personal stats.

Can I personalize an email to a friend?

  1. Yes! Click on the Race "Invite Friends" link found on the left column menu at the bottom of the page, under "Race Home"
  2. Click on the link that where it says, "Click here to view the standard invitation text or to personalize it."
  3. Add your personal greeting and subject in the fields provided and click on the "Submit" button.
  4. Return to the Invite Friends page and Input your friends' email addresses in the fields provided.
  5. Click on the submit button and your personalized invitation will be sent along with your unique Race tracking code.
Hint: You can test this by sending yourself an invitation!

What happens if I use the online invitation form with the wrong email address for a friend?
It will bounce back to you. Then you make the corrections and forward it. Our system will have already included the link containing your unique tracking code.

I've visited more frequently than some race leaders. Why am I not in the top 100?
Two reasons:
1) You get credit not just for your visits, but also for the visits of your friends, and your friends' friends, etc... So, some of the leaders have had friends who have visited many times.
2) The value of a visit is determined by how many sponsors we have at the time, and how much they are paying to sponsor the Race (i.e. some visits help more than others).

Can I sign-up for multiple accounts to improve my race standings?
No! To be fair to our advertising sponsors, we ask that you sign-up for only one account. We reserve the right to terminate any account that appears to be abusing the integrity of the Race. We very much support efforts to support more Big Cat habitat, but please consider the privacy and rights of all parties involved before doing anything too "creative".

Why can I only receive statistics for "six levels" of people?
That number was chosen because it enables people to understand the wider impact they have in the world. You influence your friends, who influence their friends, etc.

How can I change the settings for my email updates (reminders)?

  1. Login to the Big Cats Race.
  2. Click on the "My Settings" link found on the left-hand bottom of the page under "Donations Per Day."
  3. Change your reminder settings.
  4. Scroll down the page and click on the "Submit" button to save your settings.

How can I change the Email address of my account?

  1. Login to the Big Cats Race.
  2. Click on the "My Settings" link found on the left-hand side of the page under "Race Stats."
  3. Enter your current email address in the field provided. (Note: this will be the address to which we send all reminders and updates for your race account).
  4. Scroll down the page and and click on the "Submit" button to save your settings.

Sponsorship Information

Where does the money come from to support Big Cat habitat?
Two sources: Care2.com guarantees a $1 CPM donation will be made for every click, regardless of whether there are any paying sponsors.

In addition, paying sponsors make donations directly to Wildlife Conservation Society. So, please click on our sponsors' buttons, visit their websites and support their businesses/organizations. The more frequently that Race participants click on the buttons to visit sponsors' sites and make purchases, the more likely our sponsors are to continue their support of the Races. So, please show them your support! (CPM is an advertising term meaning 'payment per thousand page views')

How much money do sponsors donate?
Race sponsorships vary in value, but are usually .5 cents per click ($5 CPM), up to one visit per day by any individual.

Does all the money raised go directly to supporting Big Cat habitat, or, will Care2 and its sponsors profit, too?
Care2 donates 100% of its net revenues from the Race for the Big Cats to WCS' Big Cat programs. In fact, Care2 donates to WCS $1 CPM no matter how many paying sponsors there are. Care2 makes these donations out of advertising sponsorship revenues we generate through our environmental portal, . We may reward Care2 sponsors for their generosity by placing their ad buttons on the Big Cats Thank You page.

How much does it cost to be a sponsor?
The minimum sponsorship donation is $1000. Click here to learn more about sponsoring a great cause! To donate less than $1000, click here to donate to WCS directly.
